2nd anniversary & sours at Kane

Kane Sours 1

Kane Brewing salutes its second anniversary as a brewery on Saturday, Sept. 21, with a dozen and half beers on the tasting room tap lineup, welcoming the next business year with brews hoppy and bold.

Besides marking a milestone, the event also offers a snapshot of the Monmouth County brewery's exploration of sour beers. The day's tap list includes three sours, Apiary Brett, Sour Blonde and Sea Change, reflecting the folks at Kane's tastes for not only well-hopped American IPAs, rich dark ales, but some of the more intriguing Belgian styles as well.

Images from Ramstein Oktoberfest

Ramstein Marzen

Some sights from High Point Brewing's annual Ramstein Oktoberfest release. Folks at the 17-year-old brewery say the turnout Saturday (Sept 14) was probably the largest in the many years that High Point has been showcasing its fall märzen with a brewery-tour event. High Point has been brewing the fest beer (it's still made via a decoction mash) for 14 years, building a substantial following for the beer in that time. High Point's märzen is the beer that nudged the brewery to add lagers to its founding lineup of wheat beers. Traditional German brews still form the foundation of High Point's beers. But next to the hefeweizen, dunkelweizen, wheat doppelbock, these days you'll find some brews that play to hop-heads' palates and Belgian beer enthusiasts showing up in the lineup from time to time.

Ramstein märzen debuts Saturday

High Point Brewing debuts the 2013 rendition of its popular Oktoberfest beer on Saturday, Sept. 14, with its traditional oak barrel tapping at the brewery.

But for the first time in the märzen's 14-year history, craft beer drinkers in South Jersey could see the fall brew on bar taps and growler stations: High Point's distribution now hits just north of Cherry Hill on the west side of the state, and just north of Atlantic City on the east.

Tuckahoe bottler at a glance

Tuckahoe Cases

One more out of Tuckahoe Brewing …

The folks at the northern Cape May County brewery have been putting their new six-head filler to work turning out cases of 12-ounce bottles. Last week, they put up 22 cases of Holly Beach Pumpkin ale with the Meheen filler.

The plan is to bottle all of the flagship beers, such as Dennis Creek Pale Ale, to help manage fermenter capacity and widen the brewery's reach some without undercutting supply to core accounts.

About the filler
Tuckahoe's filler (check the photo gallery at left) is a popular machine among craft brewers of varying sizes, including a 15,000-barrel craft brewery. Company owner Dave Meheen says Anheuser-Busch even uses the fillers when it's bottling for test markets or bottling samples for lab testing.

Iron Hill in the pumpkin patch

Chris Lapierre IHMapleShadeIt didn't take pumpkin ales showing up on the shelves in July this year to signal that a bumper crop of the wildly popular fall seasonal is at hand.

Probably more than last year, but who's counting?

And speaking of last year, 2012 figures big into the pumpkin ale release set for this Saturday (Sept. 7, 1 p.m.) at Iron Hill brewpub's Maple Shade location: The bourbon barrel-aged version of the imperial pumpkin ale that tops the day's marquee was actually brewed last year, then stowed away in a Heaven Hill whiskey barrel for tapping at this year's event. (All 10 Iron Hill locations will release pumpkin ales on Saturday for the annual "Welcome, Great Pumpkin" party.)

Carton's Boat 1st N.J. craft brew in cans

Carton Brewing on Wednesday became the Garden State's first craft beer maker to package in cans, teaming with a Connecticut-based mobile canning company to put its signature session ale in 16-ounce cans.

Over the course of five to six hours, the Atlantic Highlands brewery and Iron Heart Canning put up 400 cases of Boat, the hoppy 4.2% ABV session beer that Carton launched its brewery with two years ago this month.

has been doing some fine-tuning in its new home of Ewing.

Almost two months after officially leaving Lambertville, River Horse has bumped up its fermenter space by a total of 120 barrels, making some quick use of the relative abundance of building space Ewing has compared to the brewery's founding location.

Hoppy 4.6% ale a Ripple effect at Kane

Hops Event at Kane
From Kane Brewing comes a new draft offering that speaks to the Monmouth County beer-maker's hops-forward identity while saying "session beer."

Well-dosed with Nelson Sauvin hops, Ripple debuts in the Ocean Township brewery's tasting room on Saturday, Aug. 24. (There's also a tap takeover on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Tavern on the Lake in Hightstown.)

Spellbound gathering momentum

Spellbound LogoNearly everything was, as John Companick explains it, going in the wrong direction.

A warehouse fire in Washington State and bad weather in Europe were making big waves in the hops market, driving prices up. Steel prices also spiked.

The prospects weren't good for the brewery John hoped to open and make the jump from homebrewer to pro brewer.
